Why We Are Drawn to Art: The Power of Connection and Healing

Ever since humans walked the earth, art has been part of our story.
From ancient wall paintings and beadwork to sculptures, art has existed for over 75,000 years, as shown by archeological discoveries (South Africa’s Blombos Cave). But why are humans so captivated by art?

Yes, art is beautiful, but its impact goes much deeper. Art has a healing effect!

Art Connects Us to Nature, Beauty, and the Divine

Art has the power to connect us to something greater—nature, beauty, or even God. Take Michelangelo’s Pietà, for example. This sculpture of Mary cradling Jesus after His crucifixion touches my heart. It reminds me how fragile humanity is and that every life is precious. We are all someone’s child, deserving of grace and mercy, even when we make mistakes.

Spiritual art, like the Pietà, also helps us meditate, relax, and refocus on what truly matters.

Art as Emotional Transformation

Painting, photography, and sculpture are powerful tools for healing and emotional transformation. They have the unique ability to help us release emotions we may not even realize are buried deep inside. For artists, creating art offers a safe and expressive outlet for feelings that are often hard to put into words.

Even if you’re not an artist, simple acts like scribbling when you’re angry can provide relief and help you move forward. This is one reason why adult coloring books have become so popular. People are discovering that art—whether it’s coloring, doodling, or painting—can help us cope, release tension, and take a break from the stresses of everyday life.

Encouraging Curiosity and Discovery

In addition, artwork sparks curiosity. Works like Da Vinci’s The Last Supper or ancient cave paintings invite us to explore the stories, techniques, and cultures behind them. Even a close-up photograph of a bug can transport us to a different world, filled with intricate, alien-like creatures.

Art Speaks Differently to Everyone

What I love most about creative masterpieces is its ability to affect people in unique ways. For example, my photography piece, The Race, evokes diverse reactions: some connect with the natural beauty of the mountains, others feel the stress of crowded spaces, while some see it as a chance to engage with a vibrant outdoor community. This variety of interpretations highlights art’s ability to inspire, challenge, and resonate differently with each viewer.

For me, Lake Louise holds a special place in my heart, and it’s where this photo was taken. While the lake’s beauty truly shines in pictures, the reality is that it’s often crowded with visitors. I captured this shot because, despite the congestion, Lake Louise remains one of the most breathtaking places on earth. It always brings a smile to my face to see people stepping away from their screens and immersing themselves in the beauty of nature. And as a fun bonus, the busier it is, the lower the chances of encountering and being eaten by a bear!

Reminder of Life’s Bigger Picture

Art also offers perspective. Michelangelo’s Pietà reminds me not to take the material world too seriously. Many of our troubles are temporary, and this piece helps dissolve my anger and frustration, offering peace in the moment.
